Local Company Invests In Student Business Endeavors

Melissa Bailey

Sierra Madre based Wound Care Advantage (WCA) will host its first scholarship event on April 10 at their corporate office.

Michael Comer, CEO of Wound Care Advantage, founded the scholarship fund to motivate students to become leaders and entrepreneurs. He was invited to share his entrepreneurial experiences with The Boys and Girls Club of Pasadena late last year. There, he presented the opportunity for the scholarship and told the students to write a business plan for a company they would like to own based on “what they hate”.

“The standard advice most adults give is somewhat along the lines of finding what you like to do and doing that for a living. I don’t know about most adults, but what I like seems to change from week to week. After the death of my father to cancer in 1994, I realized that what I hated was a far more potent motivator. I hated the disrespect that patients were shown while dealing with life threatening diseases. I most hated that patients could develop wounds due to lack of appropriate care and that these wounds could lead to complications, amputations and even death. We hope the scholarship motivates young people to not just find what they like to do, but instead to identify what they hate, and do something about it,” Comer said.

The students drafted business plans and submitted them to Wound Care Advantage. The scholarship panel and Mike decided on three student business plans. The recipients, Cassandra Cisneros, Donte Gaffeild and Michael Patton, and their families have been invited to the event on April 10 at 4:30 p.m. located at 304 W. Sierra Madre Blvd. Sierra Madre, CA 91024.

“I believe the American dream is not dead, rather I believe it exists in the opportunity to start your own business, your own legacy, or develop your own solution. Our country will continue to rise based on the endeavors of these motivated and creative people we call entrepreneurs. I feel that we owe that to our youth and it is our responsibility to cultivate that passion early,” Comer said.
