Norma Marlowe

David L. Greco, M.D. and Lori Fischl, PA

This month, we’d like to highlight the Wound Healing Center at Columbus Regional Healthcare System in Whiteville, North Carolina. Now celebrating its fifth year serving Columbus County, the Center offers specialized treatment for non-healing wounds stemming from conditions such as diabetes and vascular disorders. Treatment options include debridement, bioengineered skin substitutes, hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT), and total contact casting. The Wound Healing Center recently welcomed a new physician’s assistant, Lori Fischl, PA. She graduated from Yale University School of Medicine and has more than 20 years of experience.

David L. Greco, MD, the Center’s medical director, has been practicing medicine in North Carolina for more than 20 years. He graduated with honors from Loyola University of Chicago Stritch School Of Medicine.

Q&A with Dr. Greco:

1. What are the most common conditions causing chronic wounds for patients in your area?
The majority of patients that come to our center have diabetic foot ulcers or venous stasis disease, but we also treat patients with osteomyelitis, traumatic wounds, radiation cystitis, radiation proctitis, and non-healing surgical wounds.

2. Why is it important for patients to take an active role in the healing process (i.e, compliance)?
Patient compliance is a very important part of the treatment plan. We do our best to educate our patients on compliance and good self-care in order to improve the healing process and prevent the recurrence of wounds. We keep an open dialogue and encourage them to ask questions.

3. What new developments in the wound care industry excite you the most?
Skin substitutes. There are many options available, with new ones hitting the market every month. Skin subs have been a game-changer for many of our patients because they encourage cell growth, promote rapid healing, and they’re relatively easy to use.

4. What are you most proud of at your wound center?
The staff here at the Wound Healing Center is incredibly competent and friendly. They have a tremendous knowledge of wound care and as a result we have excellent wound healing rates. It’s a pleasure to work here, and our patients like being here. That says a lot.

5. Lori Fischl, PA, recently joined your team. What is her role and how will she help your patients?
Lori is a wonderful addition to our team and we’re very fortunate to have her on board. She has extensive experience with wound care, surgery, and hyperbaric oxygen therapy. Our patients will appreciate her wealth of knowledge as well as her positive bedside manner.
